What They Are

What Prediction Markets Are

A prediction market lets you trade event contracts tied to real-world outcomes. A contract represents a question with a definable result, and its value moves as the likelihood of that result changes. When the event resolves, the contract settles at a value that reflects what actually happened.

For New Mexico residents, this is a legal, federally regulated way to engage with the markets in a state where online options have long been limited. You are trading a financial instrument on a regulated exchange, not signing up with a local operator.

Mechanics

How Prediction Markets Work

The mechanics are straightforward once you see a contract priced on the screen:

  • Priced 0 to 100: Each contract trades on a scale from 0 to 100, and that number reflects the market's read on the probability of the outcome. A contract near 70 signals a likely result; a contract near 20 signals an unlikely one.
  • Open and close a position: You do not have to hold until the event resolves. You can open a position and then close it earlier if the price moves, taking the difference as a gain or a loss.
  • Settled by the outcome: If you hold to resolution, the contract settles based on what actually happened. A contract on a result that occurs settles toward 100; one on a result that does not occur settles toward 0.
  • Regulated as derivatives: These contracts are treated as financial derivatives on a federally regulated exchange, a different framework from casino gaming.
The Difference

How a Regulated Exchange Is Different

On a prediction market you trade an event contract with other participants on a regulated exchange. Your position is a financial instrument whose value moves with the probability of an outcome, and it settles based on what actually happens. There is no house setting a price for you to take or leave.

That federal oversight, at the exchange level, is the reason these markets can reach states where other online options are not licensed. The regulatory path is different, and so is the product.

Be measured about the legal picture. These markets are contested in some jurisdictions, and availability is not the same everywhere. Do not assume every market is offered in your state, and do not treat this as settled in all 50 states, because it is not.
